American Idol, Season 3 - Week By Week

Dear God, what are they thinking.. COUNTRY WEEK??? This could've been absolutely terrible, but fortunately most of them picked out tunes that have either been covered by non-c&w groups, or were cross-over hits for c&w groups. Really the only indication most of the night that it was country were the twanging guitars in the background. Fortunately, the excellence of the vocals continued and much of their performing is improving as well. Now there're 3 rankings next to every name. The first is the overall, the second is last week, and the third is just how they did this week alone.

George Pic1-1-4. George Huff: Shaky at times, but awesome at others, George is George. Didn't think he'd take to country too well, and there were a few problems, but very nice adaption, and great song choice. George pwns all.
Tasia Pic2-2-1. Fantasia Barrino: As usual, the weird way she pronounces words got to me a bit,but other than that another fantastic performance. And she didn't even try to put the slightest bit of country inflection in her voice, a definite plus! Brought down the power a notch, and just gave a very beautiful performance.
Latoya Pic3-4-2. Latoya London: Heh, very.. interesting.. song choice here. Not bad, though it would've been MUCH better without whatever those backup vocals were doing with the verses. Definitely got everything out of that song that there was to get, high energy, high notes, nice performance. She hasn't done anything yet to match her initial top32 performance, but she's changing it up every week and putting on a show.
Diana Pic4-5-3. Diana DeGarmo: A few pitch problems, but she covered fairly well, and sounded quite good throughout. Very nice performance overall, with an _excellent_ sustained note powering it. Quite good.
Jen Pic5-3-5. Jennifer Hudson: Well, I'll be, the hair goes down. Looks quite good too, though she's still doing the facial expressions... Anyway, good performance, did a good job handling the country of the song. Good, not a lot to it, but good.
Jon Pic6-6-6. Jon Peter Lewis: Wow, took a slow song and changed it up a bit. Aside from a few pitchy spots, I thought he sounded quite good. He's a very good performer, looks like he's sincere about doing whatever he may be doing that week, be it goofy or serious. Nice job.
Amy Pic7-11-8. Amy Adams: Well, she actually sang her song in country style, and obviously had a lot of fun with it too. She avoided the patent sweetness her voice has been pumped full of of late... and it actually worked. Certainly wouldn't play the song on my own time, but she sounded good, had fun performing it, and did an excellent job. Nice work.
Jas Pic8-7-10. Jasmine Trias: Well, as it usually is, the beginning of this song was a bit low on her, but she survived. The rest of it was just ok, missed a few pitches, and she herself didn't look like she was particularly hapy with it. Simply didn't have it going tonight, completely different performance from last week, we'll just right it off to country music and move on. She's still almost painfully cute with that flower though.
Matt Pic9-8-9. Matt Rogers: I figured Matt'd do alright with country, and alright he did. Nerves obviously don't bother him, and he's a strong performer.. only thing really hurting him is that he just doesn't have as good a voice as most of the other competitiors. He puts out a strong performance every time, sings to his potential, I'm just not sure he's got the natural talent it takes. And Simon just needs to give it a rest, you CAN'T SMILE WHEN YOU SING NOW??? And you can't both crack at artists for doing the same thing every week AND crack them for doing something different. Even some of the heaviest artists around have been known to throw in a soft song here and there (heck, Opeth's last album was nothing BUT soft guitar driven stuff), so don't throw 'sellout' around whenever something different is tried... especially on country night.
John Pic10-12-7. John Stevens: Well I'll be, he actually did somethin that sounds a bit different. A classic song with a bit of a bounce to the melody, and he actually did it quite well. I wasn't even sure it was a mistake til the judges mentioned the words. Surprisingly good job, he himself is still boring as anything, but the song wasn't as bad.
Camile Pic11-10-11. Camile Velasco: I absolutely LOVE this song... and she did ok with it. She was really shaky in her singing, don't know if it's nerves or what. It's an easy song to put runs into, but it almost felt like she was disconnecting the runs from the main lines or something. Don't know, it was ok I guess, blah.

Well, this is unfortunately where the lost, the losers, the done, and the cashiers go. Only two rankings for these folk, the week they went out in and the rank I had them at the time.
Leah Pic12-9. Leah LaBelle
